USPGA Autumn Meeting 2020
The USPGA held its Autumn Meeting at Walton Heath Golf Club on 7 October 2020. The Association’s fixtures have, needless to say, been disrupted by the COVID-19 situation this year.
This fixture was originally scheduled as a Spring Meeting in April but it had to be postponed. The Club was able to accommodate us in October, observing current COVID-19 rules and regulations. 11 Old Members loyally attended. We enjoyed very good weather. We played the New Course – not very new as a matter of fact, having been first laid out by the great course architect Herbert Fowler in 1907, and still remarkably faithful to his designs.
The course, with its vicious heather for those who wandered off the straight and narrow, was a challenge for a few to say the least, but Mike Schilling (PPE, 1975) won the USPGA Cup with a fantastic score of 39 Stableford points. Tim Low (Chemistry, 1976) won the Nearest The Pin prize on the 2nd. The Longest Drive prize, on the 18th, was, to nobody’s surprise, won by the young Mark Timpson (History, 2007). It was a most enjoyable day.
