Univ Ambassadors visit Devas Club

Univ Ambassadors visit Devas Club - Devas Club signFounded in 1884 by Univ student Jocelyn Devas, The Devas Club is a South-London charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children and young people through a wide range of activities. Two Univ Ambassadors, Laura Fulton (2021, Oriental Studies) and Elizabeth Stuart (2021, Classics) visited the Devas Club in London in April, and Elizabeth has provided a report of their experience.

On Thursday 10 April, Laura and I were lucky enough to head to London to see the Devas Club. Devas Juniors had visited us during Hilary Term, and they were amazing guests, full of questions and very inspired by their trip to Univ. They kindly invited us to see their club, and we were excited to accept.

Devas gave us a very warm welcome, and it was lovely to see the Juniors so excited to see us again! After a tour from the wonderful staff, and some games and snacksUniv Ambassadors visit Devas Club - a goat at a city farm with the Juniors, we set off to Vauxhall City Farm. We joined the children on two activities – first was a tour of the animals, where we fed the goats and were very entertained by fluffy chickens and looking for frogs in the pond, and then a wonderful educational session from the farm staff about how things grow and then reach our plates.

It was wonderful having Devas visit us at Univ, but seeing the children in their own environment really allowed us to see the amazing work Devas do. The Juniors were certainly enthused to continue their studies by visiting Univ, and we had a few say they wanted to be Univ students in future! They were also inspired to grow their own radishes by the session at the farm. The staff at Devas are so committed to improving the lives of their young people, and our visit really showed this. We’re even hoping to get more Univites visiting Devas to further our long-standing partnership with a club doing such amazing things for young people.
