UK General Election 2024
Eight Old Members were elected as MPs in the 2024 UK General Election on Thursday, 4 July.
Paul Waugh (1985, PPP)
Paul Waugh was elected as the MP for Rochdale for the Labour and Co-operative Party. Previously, he was political editor of HuffPost UK and editor of PoliticsHome. He has also been deputy political editor of both The Independent and the London Evening Standard.
Dan Tomlinson (2010, PPE)
Dan Tomlinson (2010, PPE) has been elected as the MP (Labour) for Chipping Barnet. Dan began his career at HM Treasury and then worked at the Resolution Foundation for seven years. Prior to becoming an MP, he was Principal Policy Advisor at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the UK’s leading anti-poverty charity.
Roz Savage MBE FRGS (1986, Law)
Roz Savage MBE FRGS (1986, Law) was elected as the MP (Liberal Democrats) for South Cotswolds. Roz Savage is a United Nations Climate Hero, a trained presenter for the Climate Reality Project, and an Athlete Ambassador for 350.org. She is an English ocean rower, environmental advocate, writer and speaker. She holds four Guinness World Records for ocean rowing and was the first woman to row solo across three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. In 2013, she was awarded an MBE for services to environmental awareness and fundraising. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was a recipient of a Yale World Fellowship.
Calum Miller (1996, PPE)
Calum Miller (1996, PPE) (Liberal Democrats) has been elected to the new seat of Bicester and Woodstock. He is a Supernumerary Fellow at Univ as well as Senior Fellow of Practice in Public Management at the Blavatnik School of Government. He is also the Co-Director of Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), a research programme seeking to identify what works in shaping systems that can deliver high-quality education for all students. Previously, Calum spent 13 years in the UK civil service, including working as Principal Private Secretary to the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, and at various times in the Treasury, the Cabinet Office, the Foreign Office, and the Department for International Development.
Richard Fuller CBE (1981, PPE)
Richard Fuller CBE (1981, PPE) was elected as the Conservative MP for North Bedfordshire. He was awarded a CBE for Political and Public Service. A member of the Conservative Party, he previously represented Bedford from 2010 to 2017. Currently, he is interim Chairman of the Conservative Party. He initially achieved prominence as the leader of the Young Conservatives from 1985 to 1987.
Andrew George (1980, Plant Sciences)
Andrew George (1980, Plant Sciences) (Liberal Democrats) was reelected as the MP for St Ives. He was the Liberal Democrat MP for the West Cornwall and Scilly constituency of St Ives 1997-2015. Andrew is Chief Executive of Cornwall Community Land Trust (an affordable housing charity) and runs various research projects and campaigns with the support of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust and other organisations. Since 2006, he has been the Chair of the British Association for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.
Keir Mather (2020, MPP)
Keir Mather (2020, MPP) was reelected as the Labour MP for Selby. He was also appointed Assistant Whip, House of Commons on 10 July 2024. At Oxford, he was a Political Leadership Scholar — a scheme that was “open to applicants from the UK and Republic of Ireland who intend to run for public office”. While at Univ, he was a Co-Chair of the Oxford University Labour Club. After graduating, Keir Mather worked as a public affairs adviser for the Confederation of British Industry for 18 months. Previously, he was a parliamentary researcher for Labour MP Wes Streeting.
Chris Philp (1994, Physics)
Chris Philp (1994, Physics) (Conservative) was reelected for Croydon South. He is currently the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons. He was Minister of State in the Home Office between 26 October 2022 and 5 July 2024. He was Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office between 14 October 2022 and 25 October 2022, and he was previously appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 6 September 2022 to 14 October 2022.
