NIHR Senior Investigator
Professor Najib Rahman, Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Supernumerary Fellow in Medicine, has been named National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator in recognition of being among the most prominent and prestigious researchers funded by the NIHR and the most outstanding leaders of patient- and people-based research within the NIHR research community.
Professor Rahman directs the Oxford Respiratory Trials Unit (ORTU), and leads trials methodology and the Pleural Disease Group. ORTU has a track record in the design, delivery and analysis of trials in a number of areas of Respiratory Medicine including pleural disease, sleep apnoea, airways disease, cancer, radiology and physiological.
His group conducts a diverse portfolio of research in pleural infection, undiagnosed pleural effusion, malignant pleural effusion, mesothelioma, pneumothorax, imaging and intervention. This work spans laboratory-based translational work, early phase discovery science and practice changing clinical trials at oligo and multi-centre levels.
Professor Rahman is also the Tutor in Clinical Medicine at Univ, providing supervision, coordination and teaching for medical students in their clinical years (years four to six), which includes bedside teaching, pastoral care and careers advice. He also provides tutorials in pathology in the second year and can provide advice and tutorials in the run-up to the FHS.
