Milestones Anniversary Reunion

Milestones Anniversary ReunionUniv’s Old Members who matriculated in 1954, 1955, 1964, 1965, 1974 and 1975 and their guests were invited back to College to celebrate 50, 60 and 70 years respectively since their matriculation.

Andrew Moore (1964, History) has written a report of the reunion.

Reunions for older Univ alumni are poignant affairs. Who will show up? Will I recognize anybody? And how many who were present at previous gatherings will be absent at this one through death or infirmity? Thus, attendees at the Milestones Anniversary Reunion lunch on September 5th arrived with decidedly mixed feelings. In the event, turnout was strong and the years were well represented. The 1975 (19) and 1974 (19) contingents were at retirement age and fresh from career fulfillment. The 1965s (12) and 1964s (13) were around 80 years old and preoccupied with their volunteer commitments. The stalwart three from 1954 were proud to represent a generation that today seems distant. Together, there were enough present, with spouses and other guests, to fill the Hall for lunch and to engage with enthusiasm in a full day of associated activities.

A champagne reception in the Alington Room helped start the flow of conversation. A gracious welcome from Felice Nassar, Director of Development, Communications and Alumni Relations, set a warm tone. The lunch was a gastronomic feast, and a splendid demonstration of the skills of the catering staff. Remarks by the Master, Baroness Valerie Amos, provided significant insights on key college initiatives. And brief speeches by the JCR and WCR Presidents and WCR Vice President gave us glimpses of current student interests. The lunch concluded with an a cappella recital of folk songs by the Martlet Voices. These events were bookended with informative displays of fascinating documents from the Univ Library and illustrations of the Univ North development that will welcome its first students this term.

As the day progressed we found much to discuss with fellow alumni. Univ’s tradition of providing a friendly welcome to members of its community proved enduring and inspiring. We were united in gratitude to the College for admitting us in the first place and then sending us forward prepared to contribute meaningfully in our future lives.

For this writer, September 5th had added import. Fifty five years ago to the day my wife and I were married in the College Chapel by my former history tutor Tom Parker. A memorable celebration indeed!
