Celebrating Black History Month 2024
October marks Black History Month, a time to honour the profound contributions and enduring influence of Black people across various fields and communities. Here at Univ, we join in this celebration by recognizing the achievements, challenges, and stories of Black individuals, both within our college and beyond.
This year, we’re pleased to share a conversation with Aliyyah Gbadamosi, a Univ student who has found inspiration and support within the Univ community. In a video interview, Aliyyah reflects on her experiences, discussing what Black History Month means to her, who inspires her, and how Univ has been a source of encouragement and empowerment during her academic journey. Watch Aliyyah’s video below:
Univ’s commitment to inclusivity and celebration of diversity is a core value embraced across the college. Baroness Valerie Amos, Master of University College, Oxford, captures this sentiment, urging reflection and continual celebration:
“This Black History Month, let us not only celebrate the contribution of Black people to our nation, but also reflect on the need to move forward to make sure that this reflection and celebration doesn’t just happen one month a year, but throughout the year.” -Baroness Valerie Amos, Master of University College, Oxford.
As we celebrate Black History Month, we aim to foster a culture of ongoing awareness, understanding, and advocacy, inspired by the voices within our community.
