Goldschmidt 2025 in Prague

Goldschmidt 2025 in PragueKeasbey Travel Fund report – Megan Taylor (2024, Environmental Research)

In early July, I travelled to Prague to attend Goldschmidt 2025, the premiere international meeting on geochemistry. This conference provided a key opportunity to present on research I conducted since starting my DPhil in October and gain feedback from leading experts in my field.

The conference involved presentations on a wide variety of research themes during the day, where attendees could move between sessions. I attended sessions focussed on volcanism, magmatic systems, and hazards and biogeochemical cycles in earth systems, which were an excellent opportunity to learn about the new research ongoing in these areas. Each afternoon, poster presentations were held which provided a chance to chat to others about their research and get to know some of the other PhD students, with networking events organised in the evening providing the opportunity to meet leading authorities in the field and socialise with my peers.

I presented my poster on Crustal Sulphides under St Vincent, Lesser Antilles Arc on the penultimate day of the conference and had some interesting discussions with other scientists working in similar areas. In particular, I had some valuable discussions about the use of degassing models to determine the relative timing of sulphide vs volatile saturation, and analysis of apatite to determine melt redox conditions. This has given me some new ideas to consider in my PhD moving forward.

I really enjoyed this experience of presenting my work at an international conference which provided a key opportunity to practice presentation skills, gain feedback on this preliminary work, and network with other students and academics in my field. Thank you to University College and the Keasbey Travel Fund for providing the grant to attend this conference.
