Tetrahedron 2024 – Jess Crompton (2020, Synthesis for Biology and Medicine (CDT))

I received a travel grant from the University College Old Members’ Trust Graduate Conference and Academic Travel Fund 2023-24 to enable me to attend a large conference covering a range of areas related to Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology this summer. Throughout the week I attended various talks from experts in their fields with a wide range of applications, including studying the mechanism of disease and chemical methodology which has applications which could enable the quicker, more efficient synthesis of drug compounds. It was very interesting to see the wide range of chemistry that is being explored in the field.

As part of the conference, I was accepted to give a short talk on some of my DPhil work. I was the only PhD student that was selected to give a short talk on my research and I presented the findings of my first two DPhil projects. After the talk, I received some interesting questions to follow up in future work as I come to the end of my DPhil studies. I was also able to attend many poster sessions and engage with other PhD students working in organic chemistry and chemical biology. I really enjoyed the opportunity to discuss a diverse range of chemistry with them and also valued the opportunity to discuss things further with them at the conference dinner, which was hosted at the beautiful Château de Pouget.

Overall, I had a fantastic week in Montpellier and really enjoyed the opportunity to travel there to present my research. Outside of the conference, I also had some time to explore the city where I visited the oldest medical school still in operation and other interesting sights.
