Why does history matter?
On the 13th of February, Elizabeth Adams, Univ’s Librarian, attempted to answer the question “Why does history matter?” for students at St. Andrew’s School in Headington.
The lunchtime talks were part of the primary school’s History Week, where students go off-curriculum to look at subjects in more depth. Helen Jezzard, one of the Teaching Assistants, led a conversation about the history of books, Univ’s special collections, being a librarian in Oxford, and letterpress printing.
The students were intrigued to know why librarians no longer wear white gloves when handling early books, to learn about the Library’s oldest printed books and manuscripts, and to hold the key that opens our Victorian Gothic Library.
