All Old Members and Friends of Univ were invited to an evening drinks reception on Monday 20th June in the magnificent surroundings of Goldsmiths' Hall, London as part of our Univ in the City series of speaker and networking events that bring together our community of Old Members in the City. Guest speaker was Univ Old Member Antony Jenkins (1979, PPE), former Group Chief Executive of Barclays plc. Hannah Roberts (2011, PPE) has kindly provided this report:
'In the beautiful surroundings of Goldsmiths Hall, a diverse group of old member mingled after work. Univ in the City, aimed at old members now working in the square mile is an interesting forum in which old members of varied ages, can meet and learn from other members of the college who have excelled in the industry. On Monday 20th June, Antony Jenkins, former CEO of Barclays, gave an interesting and entertaining talk covering a broad range of topics from the rise of fintechs to the global financial crisis and the impending EU referendum vote. For someone in the very early stages of their career this talk was both thought-provoking and inspiring, and it was exciting to learn from one of the key leaders of the post-crisis world.
Antony’s perspective and ideas of what the world economy, the financial markets and the Banking world might look like in the future was fascinating and gave the audience insight into a demanding and constantly changing industry from someone who has held one of the most challenging roles in the market. The session was interactive thanks to William Reeve (1991) who provided stimulating questions for Antony and set the tone for what was an extremely interesting debate. I know for certain that I am very much looking forward to the next Univ in the City event.'
Univ Old Member Antony Jenkins (1979, PPE) is perhaps best known for serving as Group Chief Executive of Barclays plc, the second biggest bank in the UK. For three years, until July 2015, Antony led the bank through one of the toughest periods in global banking history, while at the same time achieving a share price rise of over 50%, well ahead of many rivals. He is currently Chairman of Business in the Community, the Prince of Wales’ flagship charity, and is a keen supporter of One Young World, a UN-backed initiative that gathers young leaders from around the globe to develop solutions to the world's most pressing issues.
