This document was transferred to the Archives from the Library in February 2001 as Accession No. 257. Its earlier provenance is unknown, but it had probably been in the College for many years.
Printed sheet titled A Speech, spoken by Mr. Hayles, a Student of University-Colledge of Oxford, and Son to the Honourable Sir Edward Hayles, With his Majesties Gracious Acceptance. The speech is one delivered by Edward Hales (matr. 1684) on 4 September 1687 in the presence of James II when he visited University College (see R .Darwall-Smith A History of University College, pp. 208 and 215-16). The printer’s name is given as “A.M.”, of London.
Hales was killed at the battle of the Boyne in 1690; a portrait of him was later given to University College.
