The Director of Music and representatives of the English Dept have been planning a series of concerts to celebrate some of this country's great writers. The first was a survey of the role of music in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night hosted by Prof Tiffany Stern. It included music by Byrd, Morley, Dring, Cornelius, Finzi, Quilter and Korngold and finished with Elvis Costello. A film was made of this event and can be seen [here]. The second was, appropriately for Univ, a look at the way the poems of one of most famous alumni, Shelley have been set to music by such composers as Vaughan Williams, Parry, Quilter, Bridge, Respighi and Hindemith. It was hosted by Prof Nicholas Halmi. Other writers to be considered in the coming years are Shakespeare again, this time looking at the songs in As you like it, and W.B.Yeats. If you would like to know more about this project, then please contact the Director of Music at firstname.lastname@example.org.
