Letter (1 sheet) from F. C. Plumptre, Master of University College 1836–70 (address, University College, Oxford) to a Mrs. Elwes advising her on how her son should apply for a Bible Clerkship at the College. Apart from giving details of the stipend and age limit of the clerkships, Plumptre also provides a list of classical authors which a potential clerk ought to have studied before applying.
Mrs. Elwes evidently did not send her son to the College: no Elwes matriculated from the College in 1851–3.
